SONY SEL1635Z Review

Hello Guys. This review covers the Sony Vario-Tessar T* FE 16-35mm F4 ZA OSS (SEL1635Z in the following text), the only wide-angle zoom lens on the Sony FE system at the end of 2014. I have used this lens in my previous trip to Europe at 2015, but the memories of that time are so intense and impressive that I leave a review for those who need this kind of information. Please note that this is a subjective review mainly focusing on sample shots and past memories rather than in-depth.

Specifications

The main specifications of the product are as follows. Notable among the items listed in the table below is a considerably shorter focal length, and an additional anti-shake device is expected to have strengths in indoor photography. In addition, the generous use of special lenses can be expected to have a considerable level of image quality.

 Focal Length

 16-35mm (24-52.5mm equivalent at APS-C)

 Lens Group

 12 elements 10 groups (5 asph. and 3 ED)

 Aperture

 Circular 7 blades

 F-stop

 F4 - 22

 Minimum Distance

 28cm

 Anti-shake

 Optical Steady Shot (OSS)

 AF

 Linear motor

 Filter Size

 72mm

 Dimensions

 D 78mm, L 98.5mm

 Weight

 518g

After the specification, let's take a quick look at the exterior. It is hard to say that it is beautiful, but its rugged and reliable appearance is shaped like a matte black steel cylinder like the typical FE Zeiss lenses. In particular, it has a similar exterior to the SEL2470Z.

Lens Design

Front | Various specifications of the lens are engraved. The filter size is 72mm. The filter size seems to be quite large, but considering the super wide angle lens of the same class, it is considered to be at a reasonable level. The word ZEISS also explains much about this lens. At first glance, the lens coating looks near green.

Side | Focus ring and zoom ring made of steel move smoothly. The movement by constant force is very appropriate. The blue shield mark on the side of lens is also beautiful. The specification of the lens is again engraved on one side FE 4/16-35. It looks very similar to the SEL2470Z except that the front lens is slightly larger. I think the design identity of the Sony-Zeiss lens is alive well.

ILCE-7M2 + SEL1635Z | The combination with the body is also good. It shows good balance when mounted on A7M2. In fact, this combination satisfies trip photography with ultra wide angle. Hybrid OSS with body and lens offers powerful 5-axis anti-shake protection.

Resolution

The SEL1635Z is an ultra-wide-angle lens, so distortion and resolution are the things that can not be avoided. First of all, there is almost no distortion except the difference caused by the perspective. Also, the resolution is quite good. First of all, let's look at the MTF chart officially provided by Sony.

On the MTF chart, we can see that the 16mm performance shows a excellent performance from the maximum aperture, and the resolution is not deteriorated even at edge. However, the MTF chart shows slightly degraded contrast at 35mm (especially at edge). As an owner of this lens, image quality at 35mm (actually from 30mm - 35mm) is one of the disappointing features. Nevertheless, the resolution of the lens belongs to a very good class.

In general, we can see that resolution is well maintained in the extreme edge. The expression in the depth of field is considerable. Image quality af 16mm F4 is comparable to the top class of ultra wide zoom (e.g., Canon's latest 16-35L F4).

If you tighten the aperture, you can get a slightly sharper image, but since you can get a good image on F4, it is not necessary to tighten the aperture much unless it is DoF or other reason. The center part seems to have already exceeded the sensor resolution of A7M2 and shows a resolution that is unquestionable for the A7R or later high-resolution body. Also, if you look at the details of the red brick at extreme edge, you can see that resolution is quite excellent.

As mentioned, resolution at 35mm F4 is not good but it is much better than you think if you tighten the aperture. In F9.0, it is neat to the center part as well as the extreme edge. Resolution is acceptable from F5.6 for me.

Starburst

Unfortunately, it is not very clean because of the adoption of the circular aperture. The circular aperture has its strengths in the beautiful expression of bokeh, but it may be a bit of a disappointment for those who want a clear starburst effect at night. If you want to get the clearness of the light at night, it is recommended to tighten the aperture to F16 ~ 22.

Optical Steady Shot

The SEL1635Z is equipped with Optical Steady Shot (OSS). It is very useful in the wide angle photographs of the room. First of all, let me take a look at the data I measured while I was reviewing the A7M2.

In the graph above (16mm), the smaller the red / yellow portion, the better, and the more green / light blue the less shaken. As you seen the graph, OSS gives much usable shots than when OSS is turned off. For 1/2s, 40% of images are usable with OSS , but only 5% is usable without OSS.

Although it is an extreme case, you can concentrate even in 0.4s and get a picture that is not shaky at all with only 2 or 3 attempts. I can hardly imagine the shutter speed approaching this range. In conventional photography, tripod is necessary to take this kind of pictures.

Low shutter speeds of 1/5 to 1/6 second can be easily compensated by OSS. Normally 1/30s is a stable shutter speed for 16mm. This gain (about 2-3 stops) is directly converted to the gain of sensitivity or apeture, It is helpful.

Though the sample was shaken very little, it is not difficult to take picture with 1/13s even at 35mm. My personal experience is that when I travel to Europe I often have to shoot in a dark cathedral, but because of the lack of light, I had to raise my sensitivity a lot with the previous NX300M + NX1224 combination. However, with the SEL1635Z, sensitivity can be lowered as much as the shutter speed compensated by OSS, so the image quality of the handheld can be achieved even in cathedrals where a tripod can not be installed.

Conclusions

Overall, the SEL1635Z is a fairly good lens. It shows an optical level similar to that of the renewed Canon 1635 F4L IS at the same time, it has a very stable picture quality overall, which is somewhat unfortunate in the 35mm area. Although I did not deal with it in detail in the review, it was expressed more beautifully even if the flare was quite good, even if it occurred diarrhea. Overall it is a very good lens that can be highly recommended for FE system users. With a good OSS, indoors photography is not a difficult thing. Furthermore, the combination with A7 series gives less volume and weight than other full frame DSLRs so that it will be very good for trip.

Pros :)

· Excellent resolution at 16mm from maximum aperture

· Solid metal construction

· Equipped with a high level of image stabilization (OSS)

· Still light weight and small size compared to its class

· Good level of flare suppression and expression.

Cons :(

· Slightly worn 35mm picture quality

· Starburst at F6.3 - 13 is not good.
